PROJECT: ARCHITECTURE AND PUBLIC SPACE PAVILION | MEXICAN DESIGN OPEN 2019
The cycle of contemporary architectural production in Mexico and its historical relationship with popular culture, has become a central issue in the context of hyper communication and interconnectivity today, that is, the more popular something is, the more it repeats itself. In architecture, the formal appropriation of its elements through repetition is every day faster, easier and at the same time, less regulated. These elements are found at the confluence of the artisanal with the industrial, and at the crossroads between the cultured and the popular. Together, these objects transcribe the visual messages of our built environment, through the selective interpretation of design, the rugged preservation of our traditions and the free reproduction of national architectural folklore.
The Architecture and Public Space Pavilion of the Mexican Design Open 2019, explores the affinities and similarities that make up the growing number of those apparently random reproductions that today form part of what we consider the Mexican identity; those reproductions that are made at some point between the interpretation of the artisanal and the folkloric, or that follow the inertial repetition of what is produced in series. The pieces presented here find their place among the "designed" variation of standardized products, the technical complexity and intellectual challenges of the vernacular, which cannot be replicated by industrial techniques. This composite architecture works within the constraints of the market, time, budget, and its own existence, while its appropriation occurs through a community that explains them through doing, and where the popular lies in potential.
By cataloguing the everyday images of these elements, those deliberately ordinary and those involuntarily extraordinary, we seek to present the popular through the relationships that exist between the practices and characters that have shaped the identity of Mexican construction.

We are an event is a collective of pedestrian collectors based in Mexico. True "flaneurs" of the 21st century, we seek to make events around the architectural discipline in the megalopolises that know a chaotic expansion. By trying to describe the most dreamlike worlds around us, if not the most delirious, we want to challenge urban responses that we consider too functional and standardized. It is by positioning ourselves as sculptors of the imagination of a city that we try to sanctify the experience of the places in which we are led to give form to a project, an idea or a form of thought.
